Power Links Golf - Blog

By Michael Fosses

Golf is a game where the technology seems to be changing each and every day.  New clubs, training gadgets, and accessories all promise to improve your game.  Seemingly, the only constant is that dimpled white ball you spend four hours chasing right?  Think again, my friend.  Golf ball technology has been constantly evolving since the game's inception.   Make no mistake, the ball can make a difference to your game.  It's the only piece of equipment that you are going to use on every stroke.  Something that is so integral, yet so oft overlooked,  deserves some thought and effort.

It wasn’t until I started seeing those frightening signs of aging creeping onto my perfectly tanned face that I decided to start wearing a hat on the golf course.  Yes, I’m embarrassed to admit that it was vanity, not health concerns, that forced me to start protecting my skin from the sun’s harmful rays.

As a beginner golfer, I was unsure about everything golf-related, from equipment and technique to fashion and etiquette.  For my first golf lesson I figured I'd give it my best, and I at least wanted to show up in the proper apparel so I wouldn't stand out on the golf course. I wanted to look appropriate and yet fashionable, sporty yet feminine, while I golfed.  So I asked myself: what do women wear on the golf course?  What women’s golf apparel is available for the executive women golfers that visit our website?  Well, after much research on the Internet, I’ve found lots of great women’s golf apparel that is fashion-forward yet appropriate the golf course!

Ruffled Feathers Golf Club in Lemont, Illinois is a beautifully designed golf course laid out in a way that makes any golfer’s mouth water, but beginners beware, this course may not be for you!  Numerous water hazards and sand traps on this course have the potential to make even first-rate golfers look foolish.

I can still remember the first time I lost to…gasp… a beginner!  Oh the pain- I thought I’d die.   And the worst part was that it wasn’t until we were in the clubhouse drinking martinis, with no more holes to play and no chance to redeem myself, when I remembered we had agreed to score using handicaps.

Golf helps build business relationships, not only because four or more hours will be spent bonding with clients or coworkers, but also because personalities become so transparent.  When playing with someone new, I can’t help but observe the way she reacts to a bad shot, her honesty, her ability to laugh at herself, and the overall way she conducts herself on the course.  And what I’ve noticed over the years is that those trends typically carry over into the business world.

Have you ever heard the urban legend that the meaning of ‘golf’ is ‘Gentlemen Only, Ladies Forbidden?’  If so, please disregard because it’s completely untrue!  And, although I don’t normally vocalize my frustration, I find it very insulting when some old crotchety man attempts to make women feel uncomfortable by shouting that story in the middle of her backswing.  According to the USGA, the word golf is derived from the Dutch word “kolf” which means “club.”   Kolf was a game played with a stick and a ball on frozen canals, and was brought by Dutch sailors to the east coast of Scotland where they began playing the game on public links land.  The word evolved to “goff” in the late 14th century, which was a phonetic spelling in Scottish dialect, and eventually to ‘golf’ in the 16th century.
